Plans launch of world’s first TD-LTE USB dongle at event for visitors to experience high-speed media mobility
November 17 2009 - BEIJING –
Motorola’s (NYSE: MOT) Home & Networks Mobility business, a leader in TD-LTE technology, announced today that Motorola has been selected by China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) as the primary TD-LTE solution partner to provide indoor coverage for all major pavilions at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China, and will also integrate and launch the world’s first TD-LTE USB dongle that supports both 2.3GHz and 2.6GHz, helping operators to build a healthy TD-LTE ecosystem.
The World Expo, held from May 1 to Oct. 31, 2010 in Shanghai, will be a key arena for a highly visible and sustained live public TD-LTE demonstration. This event has attracted great attention from telecom equipment manufacturers, both domestic and foreign. Motorola’s specialized expertise in OFDM Radio Frequency (RF) technology and class-leading TD-LTE solution performance will be leveraged to address the challenges typical of an indoor environment and provide very high sector throughput capable of streaming high-quality video applications and optimized indoor coverage for a true mobile broadband experience throughout the exhibition.
After months of rigorous evaluation, Motorola was selected for its superiority in TD-LTE in areas such as enhanced spectrum efficiency and higher download throughput. During the tests, Motorola also showcased a peak throughput of 112 megabits per second (Mbps), being the only vendor able to achieve theoretical maximum performance in 20MHz TD-LTE.
“Following the successful drive demonstration at ITU in Geneva, we’re very excited to work closely again with CMCC in bringing an TD-LTE experience to the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China," said Dr. Mohammad Akhtar, vice president and general manager for the Wireless Networks division of Motorola’s Home & Networks Mobility business in Asia Pacific. “Motorola has demonstrated its long-term commitment to LTE and is making strides toward TD-LTE commercialization and globalization. We are building on our successive demonstration of our expertise with a number of significant advancements, ranging from the industry’s first over-the-air LTE demonstration in 700MHz spectrum last year to the inspiring news we’re announcing today. The selection by CMCC is a testament to Motorola’s continuous efforts in expanding the LTE ecosystem and once again demonstrates the maturity of our TD-LTE solution.”
At the World Expo 2010 Motorola will deploy an LTE network to provide indoor coverage in all CMCC selected pavilions. Motorola’s LTE network will serve as the primary source of broadband connectivity in those locations, as well as providing backup networks for other vendors’ TD-LTE systems.
Motorola will provide an end-to-end TD-LTE solution that includes its award-winning evolved packet core (EPC including MME and GW) and radio access network (RAN), user equipment (UE) and leverage its real-life experience of commercial Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) networks with professional services to deploy, maintain and optimize these leading-edge networks. Following the celebrated world’s first live TD-LTE demonstration drive tour at the ITU Telecom World, where Motorola achieved up to 81Mbps in a real life environment, this announcement marks Motorola’s latest efforts in accelerating TD-LTE commercialization, reaffirming Motorola’s commitment to deliver next-generation networks to meet the future needs of TDD spectrum operators in China and around the world and demonstrating its expertise in delivering profitable Mobile Broadband Service via LTE to any operators in FDD or TDD mode.
Through its LTE trials and engagements with various operators in 2009, Motorola has built a leadership position in TD-LTE. Motorola is the first company in the industry to achieve optimal peak throughput for TD-LTE in both lab and field environments. In addition, Motorola also demonstrates a number of key capabilities over the TD-LTE network including mobility and hand-over with live applications, Multi-UE testing under one sector, and more.
Motorola remains on track in its LTE ecosystem plan and is working closely with other key industry players to accelerate TD-LTE commercialization. Earlier, Motorola announced the successful completion of its joint over-the-air trial with operators as part of the collaborative trials scheduled throughout 2009. Motorola is also engaged with several other global tier-one operators on TD-LTE trials that commences in Q4 2009.
Motorola’s LTE Solution
Motorola continues to build its LTE momentum with the demonstration of LTE expertise during the world’s first TD-LTE live drive demo at ITU Telecom in Geneva. This follows successful live LTE drive experiences earlier this year in Barcelona,Las Vegas, and Sweden. Motorola has been selected by KDDI as a key vendor to help develop and implement KDDI’s nationwide LTE network. Motorola also is engaged in LTE trial activity with other operators in North America, Europe and Asia, and operates an LTE trial network and testing lab in Swindon, UK.
Motorola’s LTE solution is comprised of its OFDM broadband platform and a selection of radio options that include multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and smart antennas. It also features Motorola’s advanced self-organizing network (SON) solution. Motorola's WBR 500 series LTE eNodeB offers flexible deployment options with frame based-mounted radios, remote radio heads and tower top radios to support a wide variety of LTE deployment scenarios across numerous spectrum bands to meet the needs of the global market.
Motorola’s LTE portfolio also includes its evolved packet core (EPC) solution - the Wireless Broadband Core (WBC) 700 portfolio, backhaul, network management solutions, video solutions that monetize LTE investment, and a complete portfolio of professional services. The Motorola WBC 700 is comprised of Motorola’s mobility management entity (MME), packet and serving gateways (P-GW and S-GW), and a policy and charging rules function server (PCRF).
Motorola's LTE portfolio has won multiple awards, including its EPC and advanced SON solutions being named recipients of the 2009 4GWE LTE Visionary Award. In addition the SON was recognized in the Service Management category at the 2009 CTIA WirelessE-Tech Competition, EPC as a finalist in the 2009 InfoVision Awards, and the eNodeB received a 2009 Next Generation Networks Leadership Award.
