Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest computer memory chip maker by revenue, will supply core chips to its hometown rival LG Electronics Inc. for the next-generation smartphones, a local newspaper the Maeil Business Newspaper reported Thursday, citing officials at both companies.

According to the paper, LG Electronics has begun manufacturing its solely-developed fourth-generation LTE, or Long-Term Evolution, chips at a chip assembly line of Samsung Electronics.

The production volume is estimated at somewhere between 20,000 and 50,000 units, the paper said.
